Exile Movies shot their film in Providence, Rhode Island. “Man of The People” tells the story of Senator Dan Connelly, brilliantly played by Dan Dawson. The movie co-stars Erin Megin, Chach Dziadosz, Deb Condit, Jon Audette, Joe Henry, Kathleen Knight, Michele Metivier and Jonathan Jacobs and features original music by Josh Csehak with an original song written by Harrison Condit.

The Exile crew banded together to make the film in just under 48 Hours without any pre-planning at all.  While many 48 Hour Film Project teams have meetings in advance, Exile wanted to stay true to the spirit of the competition.  The crew clicked together immediately.  The film was beautifully shot by Director of Photography, David Kruta, with lighting design by Scott Crowningshield, and sound by Dana Neugent.  The film was co-produced by Michele Metivier and Assistant Directed by Beth Czerny.  The film was shot all around Rhode Island at various locations including Eddy’s bar.  Then the film was edited at Condit studios by Philip Kruta & Jose Reyes.

Exile Movies is currently working on a feature film entitled “smalltown” as well as the web-based series, “The Devil Has A Variety Show”.

About the 48 Hour Film Project
The 48 Hour Film Project, sponsored by Panasonic, NAB, and Rumblefish, is the oldest and largest timed film competition in the world. In 2009, more than 75 cities will participate, with over 30,000 filmmakers expected. The 48 Hour Film Project’s mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers—emphasizing creativity and teamwork. While the time limit places an unusual restriction on the filmmakers, it is also liberating by putting an emphasis on “doing” instead of “talking.” The emphasis is also on building communities of local creative people, facilitating making new connections, showcasing skills, and celebrating what creativity and teamwork can accomplish in just one weekend. The 2009 tour begins in April and ends in October. For more information go to www.48hourfilm.com

Exile Competes in The 48 Hour Film Project International Shootout

On the weekend of January 23rd through January 26th, Exile was one of 41 teams to compete in a worldwide competition. The contest was only open to the city winners from last year’s 48 Hour Film Project.

We received our elements: A theme; a character finds a suitcase or briefcase containing $500,000. They find it in a public place. A line of dialogue; Will you meet me later. A character; Walt Abrams, boat owner. A prop; briefcase. And finally, a genre: Horror.

What we came up with is called “Empty”

“empty” tells the story of a desperate man who finds a case full of money and will do anything to keep it.  The story was inspired by the works of fellow Providence writer H.P. Lovecraft and is intended to be a nod to the works of the 20th century master of horror.

We are planning a public screening.  Check back for details.

Exile gears up for the 48 Hour Film Project international competition

151

On the weekend of January 23rd-25th, Exile will compete in the 48 Hour Film Project international competition. Only teams which won the best of their city are allowed to compete. This time we have three days to make a movie. We have vowed to always stick to the rules and never pre-plan for these events, so there is no telling what our film will be. Stay tuned to see what we come up with.

Exile Wins “48 Hour Film Project: Best of Providence”

Exile won this years 48 Hour Film Project in Providence. If you are unfamiliar with the project, you can learn about it here:

Here were the elements:
Character: Monte or Monica Chaney, Hairstylist
Prop: a pear
Line of Dialogue: “If you see him again, tell me.”

For our Genre we drew “Film de Femme”. We felt confident that that would be nice and easy (we had five women on our team). Too confident. I had always secretly wanted to draw the wildcard. We quickly decided to gamble and go with the wildcard. Wildcards tend to be notoriously awful genres. We decided to give it a shot.

We were handed “Political Drama” for our genre. The whole team cringed in terror at the thought of making a Political Drama. We should have stuck with the chick flick.

We pushed ahead anyway and wrote throughout the night. I woke up at 6am with a script that made absolutely no sense to anyone. By Noon on Saturday we had shot 1% of the movie. We spent most of the day in an Eddy’s bar shooting while people tried to unwind with a beer. The patrons were incredibly kind and quiet. We finished at 6pm and had shot only 30 percent of our movie.

We went back to Deb and Harrison Condit’s house which doubled as at least twelve different locations and ended up taking home the award for “Best production design.” There we shot until 4:30 in the morning and then passed out from exhaustion.

The editors Jose Reyes and Phil Kruta worked throughout the night. I woke up to see a good chunk of the cut. We worked the rest of the day and despite a few scares and some minor computer errors, (and one minor freakout by me) we got it in with fifteen minutes to spare.

We all watched the movie last night and had an amazing time. And bizarrely enough, the movie made sense.

You can see it here:

Thanks to everybody involved. Special thanks to Deb and Harrison Condit for their hospitality, as well as Deb’s terrific performance and Harrison’s great song. Also thanks to Eddy’s Bar and the
